FALL DOWN MOUNTAIN SIDE
YOUNG DUNEDIN MAN KILLED TRAGEDY AT HOLLYFORD VALLEY [Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL. February 9. Falling a considerable distance down the mountain side when attempting to cross the saddle above the Homer tunnel in the Holly ford Valley to-day, a young man. John Mac Lean, aged 2w years, of Pitt street, Dunedin, was killed. The body had .not been recovered to-night, and an effort will be made to bring it down to the headquarters camp of the Public Works Department in the Hollyford Valley to-mor-row. . Accompanied by a companion, MacLean, who was spending a climbing holiday in the Hollvford region, climbed the saddle above the tunnel this morning, intending to cross to Milford. He had evidently climbed to the height of 6,000 ft, when he slipped and fell, striking his head and being killed almost instantly. It is understood that he did not fall a very great distance, death being caused by the head injuries. Constable J. Thompson, of Lumsden, was informed of the tragedy at 6 o’clock this evening, and left immediately for the Hollyford Valley to superintend the work of recovering the body and bringing it down to the camp. [Mr Mac Lean, who was well known in Dunedin, and very popular, was an expupil of John M'Glasnan College. He entered the firm of Stronach, Moms Ltd. before taking up farming.]
