REOPENING OF INQUEST
NAVAL RACE TRAGEDY ATTORMEY-GENERAL’S DECISION [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 9. Approval of the application for the reopening of the inquest concerning the deaths of three seamen from the cruiser Leander who were drowned off Karaka Bay, in Auckland Harbour, on September 30, when a galley capsized during a race, has been given by the AttorneyGeneral (the Hon. H. G. 11. Mason). In the course of a telephone conversation with Wellington this morning the Minister said that the application for the reopening of the inquiry had been placed before him, and, after consideration, he decided to give his approval, but the final decision would have to be given by the Supreme Court. All papers, he added, had been sent forward when the inquest was held. The coroner (Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.) had returned a verdict of accidental death, but afterwards made an addition to his finding which he forwarded to the Under-Secretary for Justice. In addition, Mr Hunt said that since the inquiry had been closed the Auckland harbourmaster had publicly stated that he had notified the Achilles of the accident about an hour earlier than the time stated by Lieutenant-commander Lloyd at the inquest. If this was so an explanation was required.
