EARLY SETTLERS

DTAGO ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present;—Messrs W. J. Strong (president, in the chair), H. Baron, E. 0. Hazlett, John Hope, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, C. C. Robertson, J. C. H. Somerville, E. Webster, John Wilson, and A. E. Selby. All arrangements in connection with the celebrations of the ninetieth anniversary of the province of Otago to be held on March 23 and 24 nest were left in the hands of the Social Committee. The President reported that the Balclutha Early Settlers’ picnic would be held on February 19. The following gifts were received, and votes of thanks were passed to the donors : William Nicholson, Ettrick (from the estate of the late Mrs H. H. Herron, Roxburgh)—A framed water colour painting of early Roxburgh about 1864. Painted by Ned Hughes, painter and miner, of Roxburgh. J. Bremner, Temuka—a small photograph of Jock Graham, who earned the mail on horseback from Dunedin to Invercargill in the 1860’s, and also to Gabriel’s Gully, 1861. Messrs R. Powley and Co, Ltd., Dunedin—Booklet, ‘ Hotels of Dunedin— Historical Record.’ From the estate of the late James Graham (per Mrs J. K. M'Fie, Dunedin)—Framed portrait of his late father, Malcolm Graham, Pcictiers, 1850. Mrs H. Dunbar, Roslyn—Framed portraits of her late parents, Mr and Mrs Gilbert Al'Kay, Balclnthn. This was made in the early 1860’s by the late Thomas Agnew, for her late father, Robert Fairbairn, of Taieri Beach. From the estate of the late Aliss AI. E.
