The ‘ News Chronicle ’ says Signor Mussolini is reported to have completed the preparation of a new army of 50,000 soldiers, with artillery and mechanised equipment. They are going to Spain within a fortnight. 11 Duce believes that Britain and France will not lift a hand to stop him, even if they repeat the comparative severity temporarily shown at Nyon. They will be too late, as the troops will already be in Spain. FOREIGN DELEGATIONS ATTEND CORTES BARCELONA, February 2. (Received February 3, at 8 a.m.) Parliamentary delegations from Britain, France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Norway, and Sweden attended the Cartes on February 1. They were given a banquet after the meeting. The Britishers included Lord Listowel, junior Labour Whip in the House of Lords. STATEMENT BY MR EDEH LONDON, February 2. (Received February 3, at 10 a.m.) Mr Eden, in the House of Commons, said the Government had no information to the effect that 50,000 Italian troops were ready to go to Spain. PROTECTION OF CIVILIANS BRITISH REPRESENTATIONS. ■ LONDON, February 2. (Received February 3, at 11.30 a.m.) The British Government’ has approached both sides in Spain, and offered its services in any move to produce an agreement leading to a reduction in the danger to the civil population from indiscriminate bombing from the air. The Foreign Office announces that France is supporting the move. The Basque Children’s Committee considers that the bombing of open towns makes it impossible to send children back from England. Moreover, the parents, or most of them, are either in France or Government territory, BOMBING OF OPEN TOWNS BRITAIN SUPPORTS FRENCH PROTEST. (British Official Wireless.)
• RUGBY, February 2. (Received February 3, at noon.) The British Government is in full sympathy with the French desire that some action• should he taken in regard to the indiscriminate bombing from the air in Spain. ; The chairman’s Sub-committee of the Non-intervention Committee will meet to-morrow to consider the financial aspects of the proposed withdrawal of volunteers from Spain.
