HOSE-TAPS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I am a ratepayer who does not object to the 10s tax for those who use a hose for gardens. I already pay my share in Id in the £ on rateable value plus os extra for lavatory. I have lived in my present home for 50 years, and have been a ratepayer for the same period. In my yard is an open drain, with a tap above it, which I have always understood was there according to Drainage Board regulations. The only water being put in this drain is from the washhouse and any scrubbing water from the house, the tap being used to rinse same. As I received a notice on January 14 for 10s for a “ hose-tap,” I concluded this was the tap. I have never used or owned a hose, so 1 got my plumber to remove the tap after having the inspector up. This is the point which I and many others are objecting to: This tap was certainly convenient in the way of keeping an open drain pure, and also for occasionally in hot weather sprinkling a little water from a bucket over my yard. Now I am to be put to the trouble of obtaining the same amount of water from the washhouse; therefore this tax is an abomination to me. I and my friends will remember it when election day comes round. Let us all have meters and pay for what we use. I will sign myself what our cleric-mayor politely called anonymous writers to the Press, but it will remain to be proved whether I am . 'A Nonentity. February 2. Sk; .vs* .
