SIMULTANEOUS RAIDS
CHINESE GAMING HOUSES EUROPEANS FINED [Per United Press Association.} AUCKLAND, January 28. Raids which were simultaneously carried out by the police this afternoon on three different premises occupied by Chinese in Grey’s avenue led to the appearance in the Police Court later of seven men who were arrested on gaming charges. Four were Chinese, and the other three were Europeans. TJ;e alleged occupiers, who were charged with using their premises as common gaming houses, were Shim; Wing, of 57 Grey’s avenue, Ah Sim, of 71 Grey’s avenue, and Joe Bong, of 65 Grey’s avenue. _ Jam Me was charged with assisting in the management of the premises at 57 Grey’s avenue. They were remanded for a week on hail. George Porter, Thomas Cox, and George Siddens were charged with being found in a gaining house which the detective-sergeant said was fitted up for the sale of pakapoo tickets. “ Gaming houses could never carry on unless they were supported by people like those,” said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, B.M. ' Porter was stated to be the only one with previous gaming convictions. He was on sustenance. The Magisr trate remarked that he had no right to waste money drawn from the State in gambling, and a fine of £5 and costs (10s) was imposed. Cox and Siddens were each fined £2 10s and posts (10s). A' week was allowed for payment in each case.
