Dunedin Summer Meeting

Despite his showing the previous, day Fireguard was backed down to a snort price for the Taieri Hurdles, and kept much closer to the leaders in the early stages than on Monday. He had the race in safe keeping three furlongs from home, and won very easily. Burwood again was responsible for the good pace set, but did not jump as well, as in ■ his previous race, and spoiled ms wmnine chance by hitting three hurdles. The third he hit was about three furlongs from home and this completely settled his winning chance, but he hung on long enough to beat Master Anomaly by a short margin for second money. . . XT • Backers of favourites in the Novice Handicap fared badly, though both Valmarch and Fayo .had every chance. The latter was in charge to the home turn where Adxita ran past him, and staying on much better than on. the previous dav, won well from Straightdell, with Slayer a length away third. The last named had only £ll invested on his chance in the place machine, and returned a big dividend. _ Valmarch s performance was ■ disappointing, and i Vanity Queen, who was. the third favourite, was never prominent. In the excellent field of two-year-olds On Call, who was not started the first day, was made a good favourite, and beginning smartly he was soon m command and won with something in re. serve from Ortyx, who stayed on better than on the previous day. Kilrobe. who was narrowly beaten for second ; place, was travelling faster than either On Call or Ortyx at the finish., .and; should develop into a > useful; sprinter, Noble Maiden again‘ gave ■ a lot of trouble at the barrier and the field was eventually sent away, without - her:Douhts were cast regarding this filly s age, and the club’s veterinary surgeon was called in to examine, her mouth. After inspection he declared there was no doubt regarding her being eligible to compete in races for two-year-olds. Janet Guvnor uvae given every chance to prove herself in open company in the Grand Btand Handicap, for which she was made a short priced favourite. Jumping out. smartly - Janet Gaynor was almost dn even terms with Gold Boa at the end of two furlongs, and was still with her at the home turn. Then she failed to respond to the final call, and it was left to the improving Top Row to challenge Gold Boa over the concluding stages. But Gold Boa was a much better mare than on the opening day, and stayed on to beat him half a length. Janet Gaynor stopped badly over the last two furlongs, and only beat Viking home, The withdrawal of Made Money from the St. Andrew’s Handicap left only five to go to the post, and, \ with D. O’Connor up, Silver Streak was sent out a short-priced favourite, with Sea Fox the best fancied of the others. The favourite, when he. appeared to hold a winning chance inside the distance, was taken from the outside very sharply across to the rails, which cost him some ground, and, with Queen Dorothy, who had been prominent in the first half of the journey, finished last. Maybe Silver Streak is losing his brilliance after having been trained for two : mile races. Davolo won well, repeating his success In this race last year, and his form was in marked contrast to that shown the previous day, but quite In keeping with the good track work he was credited with previous to the meeting. Sea Fox was a good second, but Queen, of Song was very unlucky, as har she not met with interference she would have troubled the winner.

Only High Glee and Rousseau were hicked with confidence in the Farewell Handicap, and-they had the finish to themselves. High, Glee was kept nearer the leaders, Pink Del, Survoy, and Hanlon, than on the previous day, and was in charge at the home turn. Rousseau, a slow beginner, had some ground to make up over the final three furlongs, and at the distance it looked as if he might catch High Glee, but the latter drew away to score the easiest win at the fixture. After her good second to High Glee the previous day, it was not surprising to find Double Gift backed down to a nhort price in the Allanton Handicap. •Tumping away smartly, she had to race Valarth over the first half-mile, and th«n the rank outsider of the field, Song Hoy, took her on, and in the last 50yds THvet, who had drifted oyer .the early stages, put in a fine run. Double Gift stuck to her task well, and bent Song Roy a head, with a similar margin to Trivet. ValArth came again after drifting at the top of the straight, and it will not be long before he is ready to show his best form.

There was a pool of nearly £3,200 invested on the concluding event, for which Norseman was sent out the heaviest-hacked starter at the meeting. Gipsy Fair took Norseman along at a sound pace, with Top Coat and Night Wings handy. At the far turn Top Coat wa» pulled up, his rider having been struck in the eye with a lump of dirt. Gipsy Fair remained in charge until the h""'-? l "rn was made, then Night Wi- -s > 'U charge, and though challenged I>J, the favourite over the

Successful Fixture Concluded High Glee Wins A ■"• m Gold Boa Returns to Form After heavy rain overnight the weather cleared up for the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting, and the conditions were pleasant throughout the afternoon. Thanks to the excellent sward of grass on the course the rain did not affect it seriously, beyond making it a little slower for the earlier races, and it did not cut up either day.- Taken on the whole, Mr. Gieaeler’s starting was satisfactory throughout the meeting, and yesterday there were no tedious delays. The general management of the fixture was good, and it will result in a satisfactory credit. The totalisator handled £16.682 10s (win £8,194, place '£8,488 10s), as compared with £13,210 10s our the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting, £39,803 10s, represents an increase of £7.153 10s on last year’s figures.

last furiong beat him a couple ot lengths. Pink Robe just beat the sec-* ond favourite, Palmyra, for third place. Owing to the solid support accorded Norseman and Palmyra, Night Wings pj.id an unusually good price on the win machine for a third favourite. Concluding results; —
