OTAGO'S IMPROVED SHOWING 236 FOR EIGHT WICKETS .UULCOGK PERFORMS " HAT TRICK" ’ [Peh United Press Association.] CHIUSTCHURCH, December 29. With both sides hopeful of an outright win, considerable interest was manifested in the resumption of-play in the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury this morning. ■ With one down for 105 in its second innings, Otago was hopeful of adding another 140 runs before putting Canterbury in on a worn wicket with just over 200 runs to get in about three hours. Uttley (54) and Robertson (14) started off again confidently. Uttley’s fighting knock came to a close in Burtt’s fifth over. Otago’s total was then 127 for two wickets, the partnership having added 90 runs. There was some lively batting when .Chcttlebnrgh joined Robertson, the pair adding 80 in' about 50 minutes and • bringing the total to 207. Chettleburgh was particularly enterprising. : Four wickets were down for 21G when Robertson’s solid innings ended. He had batted about three hours. After Mulcock broke the partnership he went through the Otago batsmen and secured the “ bat trick ” —taking the wickets of Elmes, Howden, and Mils..
