SCHOOL YEAR ENDS
PRIZE LISTS COLIWBA COLLEGE CLOSES ADDRESS BY DR MAMON WHYTE The closing ceremony of Columha Girls’ College was held in Constance Hall last night, when there was a large attendance of parents and friends. Dr W. H. Borrie, chairman of'the Board of Governors, presided. '■ Following a short opening ceremony the school, choir sang ‘ The Lady of Shalott,’ the solo parts being taken by Judith M'Kenzie, Honor M'Kellar, Margaret White, and Olwen M'Kenzie. CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS. In the course of his introductory re- , marks Dr Borrie took the opportunity of thanking members of the Parents Association for the’help they had given during the year. It was most gratifying to the governors to know that they had such a loyal body behind them. The Old Girls had also been very helpful during the year. - PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The report of the principal (Miss C. • M. Ashworth) stated that the school began much later this year, but the gina had-worked well and a very good standard had been obtained. The dug increase in the number .of boarders nacaaaitated the appointment of-,an extra house 1 mistress. - I should like here to mention the particularly sound work that has been don© in. the stan- ' dards, especially V. and VI., Ashworth. The present Standard VI. I- regard as one of the best we have, had for a long while, and reflects great credit on the thoroughness of Miss Buchan. Their work, too, is in all cases particularly neat. * “ The . Parents’- Association and Board of Governors were responsible for - improvements to the school entrance and- a class room for the Sixth Form, and the association furnished this new ' class room, and had the heating system improved. The Braemar Ex-girls have placed'-on the north lawn a beautiful bird-bath to commemorate the work of the principals, of Brsemsr House, the Miasea Miller. Academic work this year has been sound father than, brilliant. We have no girls of really outstanding ability, but the work done has been / thorough, and the girls have fine earnestness, especially _ in ,tne matriculation form. Six girls have taken the post matriculation course, and all have been awarded the higher leaving certificate. No candidates have entered for the -University scholarship examination; the-girls have concentrated more on courses as a preparation for the University courses they wish to take next year. The standard of work in the elocution classes has been good, especially that of the junior verse-speaking choir. _ ; “ An innovation this year; and one • which has been much appreciated, was the course of talks on church history (riven in the-second term by Dr S. F. Hunter stod Professor Collie. Another innovation, hut of a different nature, has been the introduction of physical records. -Instead of small prizes for all athletic events, "each gid has a parchment scroll ' on. which is inscribed pll ber-achievements in physical, work .and games. The only prizes now given are • for championship* / in the various branches of sport, hut the girls may still win their colours for outstanding work in games and physical culture. Physical education has covered a course in gymnastic'exercise®, rod drill,-folk-dancing, and organised games. This year baseball has been introduced. In swimming great interest _ has been shown, especially in the junior school. In life saving, the girls with bronze medallions" have been coaching teams of their own and working for their instructors’ badges. Squad drill was introduced in the. second term, and with the third term has improved immensely. 1 Bod drill has been another popular introduction, and with agility exercises, has afforded variation in physical work. , . “ Although, not so large as in former years, the- Girl Guide Company had been keen and; more .regular, in attendance. ... The roll number is 19, and the average attendance 15. Seven passed their tenderfoot and five their second class testa. One first class badge was gained, this being the second to be won. by the company. Fifteen proficiency - badges have been awarded. The opening of the year will witness the end of the old uniform. It was a big venture, but has been well worth " the' change. .. Adjustments have been made, and it is.expected that 1938 will sea all girls in the new uniform. The year has been a very difficult one in many. ways, due largely to the late start, staff changes, and illness, but the -.burden has been lightened very •onsiderably by the loyalty and splendid work of the staff, particularly during my own enforced i absence. It is due to the staff that the fine standard of work has been maintained, and to ' them I tender my grateful thanks. The prefects, too, hay© done their part well and fully responded to the confidence placed in them.” MUSIC SCHOOL. The report of the music school, presented by Miss Ida 6. White, stated that the singing classes had worked on a programme of general interest rather than on songs of any special composer or period. The aural classes in the junior and primary school had done excellent work on a syllabus of rhythm and sight-singing, with special attention to creative work, the children not only writing their melodies, hut adding accompaniment to them. Piane classes were added to the work of the primary school, and an examination or those children at the end of the'year proved the experiment very successful Miss White expressed her delight with the work of the piano students. Twelve students took the examinations of the Royal Schools of Music. All W»re successful, Judith M'Kenzie gaining distinction, and five d honourable mention. In the theoretical examinations three girls passed, and RuthWeaney gained distinction in harmony Grade V. In the Trinity Clolege, both girls passed, Joy Robertson gaining the Diploma of A.T.G.L. WOMAN’S PLACE. The speaker of the evening was Dr Marion Whyte, who pointed out that real education could not be had without religion. She had followed the fortunes of the school with great interest, asd congratulated all concerned on the spint shown. The speaker commended the prize-winners, and also those who had tried hard, but had not won prizes. Some would leave school with mixed feelings—they would be sorry to leave the school, but would ■ look forward to the life ahead. ’ This was the day of independence of womanhood, she _ All over the world they were realising their Ability to work their own independent way. It was very important that this should I>" T , *'> speaker stressed the need for even woman to he so trained that she would be finan-
cially independent under any circumstances which might befaU her. This would also give her an independent outlook on. life. It was surprising that in many cases the first use a woman made of her independence was to give it up in favour of marriage. In her own home she was the uncrowned queen, and the health and happiness of her husband and children depended upon her. It was a fact that one of the primary tasks of women was left to chance. If they really knew what to buy for food there would be much less illness. It vVas a very solemn business. Women had nearly all the buying to do, yet the training was practically non-existent. In spite of that, it was marvellous how well they carried out their tasks. . The happy atmosphere of a good home could be felt, continued Dr Whyte, and whenever the home life was good it was due to the power of the womans hand. PRIZE LIST. The school report stated, inter alia: The opening of the-school year marked the sixty-sixth birthday of St. Dominic’s, 47 of which have been spent in the present building. Its walls are old and grey, but its spirit is young and vigorous. As the years pass fresh demands are mado_ of the school curriculum, and specialisation requires increased accommodation for its teaching, and hence the building of Rosary Hall, with its science and classrooms and much-needed auditorium. The blessing and opening of this new wing by Bishop Whyte took place on May 2. The guiding, and _ inspiring force of the college lies in its inner life, the heart and conscience of the pupils, nourished by the piety and virtue which are instilled and encouraged by the sisters, and inestimably so, by Bishop Whyte and the devoted priests. Eafly in the year the Education Department’s inspector examined the classes of the primary division, the results proving satisfactory, though on account of the late opening of school a programme of only two months’ work had been completed. Later, during the second term, the secondary schools’ inspector visited all the forms in St, Dominic’s, and reported favourably of them, noting especially the cultural ton© of the English studies in the higher divisions and the good spirit, manners, and deportment of the school generally. In the senior English classes a series of interesting lectures on the works of Shakespeare, delivered by Monsignor Morfcano, proved a great inceptive to the study of this branch of' literature.
At the examinations _in 1936 there were excellent results in the various; grades. In training _ college entrance two gained partial passes; in higher leaving seven, medical preliminary four, university entrance eight, higher school certificates six and intermediate examinations nine. In.the As-; seriated Board of the Royal Schools of . Music, 54 candidates passed, one gaineda performer’s diploma, another distinction in grade VTH. (final), being the 1 only candidate in the Dunedin centre to secure distinction, four gained distinction in the other grades, two for pianoforte, one violin, and one singing. In the Trinity College of Music examinations 30 candidates passed, three of these gained diplomas, licentiate grade, and four gained diplomas, associate grade, and one pupil was awarded the gold medal in higher local, having gained the highest marks‘in the Dun-; edin Centre. The highest marks, senior ; grade (Dunedin centre), in pianoforte and elocution were awarded to pupils oif St. Dominic’s College. The recreative side of school life is' provided for by concerts, dramas,_ and; fecturettes given by the Cecilian Circle, which specialises at (present in the biographies of the great musicians. 1 Enthusiasm for sport continues; the netball A team tied with St. Hilda’s for the shield, and the B team went through with an unbeaten record. I<n' the third term the girls entered for’ the intercollege handicap tennis tourna-. ments, and won both the junior handi- : cap doubles and singles. Arts and crafts have aroused considerable interest; indefed. even the junior;i classes have a creditable collection. of, exhibits. ’ ' » ’ . —Prize List.—
