OBITUARY
m C. RUSSELL SMITH The death of Mr Charles Russell Smith yesterday morning at his residence, 298 York Place, removes a personality who was closely connected with the commercial life of the city and also with many public bodies, and who was held in the highest regard by a wide circle of friends. He was a most able business man, his wise and valuable advice on matters pertaining to commerce being freely sought. Mr Smith was bom at Waikouaiti in 1871, and received his primary education at the Waikouaiti School before proceeding to the Otago Boys’ High School. Thirty years ago he joined the firm of Messrs John Reid and Co., of which he was senior director at the time of his death. His business interests were wide. He was a director of several companies, including Brown, Ewing, and Co. Ltd., Charles Begg and Co. Ltd., and the Dunedin Stock Exchange Proprietary. He was keenly interested in the public life of the community, being a member of the Otago Patriotic and General Welfare Association and the New Zealand nurses’ memorial fund, and was chairman of the Finance Committee of the Presbyterian 'Social Service Association. He also had active interests in sporting circles, being president of the Belleknowes Golf Club and a past president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, the Dunedin Bowling Centre, and the Otago Bowling Club. Ho skipped the winning rink in the Dominion Bowling Association’s tournament in 1918 when he was president of the association.
