BRITAIN WORLD'S LARGEST IMPORTER GROWING CONSUMPTION OF EMPIRE LEAF (British Official Wireless.) Press Assuciain.il in it-.i-rapu (lopvrirrh RUGBY, November 26. (Received November 27, at noon.) The Imperial Economic Committee reports that the amount of tobacco smoked in Britain is increasing, and there is a marked tendency for cigarettes to displace pipes. The report also states that the sales of Empire tobacco are increasing and the quality of Empire tobacco has improved greatly during the past few years. In the last 10 years the consumption of Empire leaf had increased at the rate of 2,000,0001 b per annum, and it was now over 23 per cent, of the total. Improvements in type in production and marketing, especially leaf coming from Canada, India, and Southern Rhodesia, have resulted in much of that leaf being suitable for the cigarette trade of the United Kingdom. In 1935 this country, which is the world’s largest importer of leaf, took 54 per cent of the exports from the United States and 66 per cent, of the total exports of leaf from Empire countries.
