ROYAL MALE CHOIR
CONCERT OH MONDAY NIGHT In the Royal Dunedin Male Choir’s concert, to be given on Monday, in His Majesty’s Theatre, Mr Alfred Walmsley has chosen for presentation seven new and six better-known part songs. A popular ballad of yesterday, but new to the choir’s library, is ‘My Grandfather’s Clock,’ an arrangement by Arnold Williams. A melodious solo and chorus popularised by the Cossack Choir is ‘ Those Evening Bells,’ in which Mr Ernest Paris will sing the solo. A lively Russian dance song of the time of the Tsar and a Hampshire folk song, ‘ Swansea _ Town ’ (Gustav Holst), are songs of joy and pleasure. For the first time in about 20 years the choir is presenting a round, ‘ Great Tom is Cast ’ (Lowes), and this novel item should win a great reception. Mr John Pringle has been entrusted with a baritone solo in one of Sir John Stainer’s lovely carols, ‘ Jesu Hail! O God Most Holy.’ Virile choir contributions are ‘ Hymn Before Action ’ (Walford Davies) and German’s ‘ Rolling Down to Rio.’ Quieter pieces are a lullaby, an evening song, and two festival carols. Items from excellent supporting artists, Miss Hazel Walker (soprano), Miss Julia Holmes, L.R.S.M. (violinist), and Mr Raymond Wentworth (bass) complete an attractive programme.
