OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council was held last night, there being present the mayor (Mr M. F. E. Cooney), Crs L. Macrae, A. R. Tait, G. White, F. Butterfield, G. A. Mitchell, G. T. Gillies, K. Familton, A. E. Hodge, J. C. Kirfcness, and N. H. Colquhoun. CORRESPONDENCE. In reply to the council’s letter, the Waitaki Power Board advised that it had decided to adhere to the arrangement made in October, 1936, for a third share of the cost of installing and dismantling festoon lighting during show week.—Received. The Oamaru Beautifying Society advised that it was willing to supply stone for the terraces in Lune street, and had already entered into the necessary arrangements for the supply of the stone. —Received. A petition signed by 36 ratepayers and residents of Humber street requested improvements to the street, which was in a bad condition. —Refereed to the Works Committee. The Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club advised that the annual “ learn-to-swim ” week would be held from December 6 to IT, and asked the councils assistance by the contribution of £5. Permission was asked to use the baths on Saturday, Decmeber 11, from 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of holding a “ learn-to-swim ” carnival.—The Mayor thought swimming should be compulsory, and it was decided to grant £5 and grant permission as requested. The North Otago Children’s Welfare Association advised that it hgd decided to forego this year its annual street collection, but asked permission to hold this at somewhere about the same time nest year.—Received, and the request was agreed to. The Friendly Bay Society requested permission to hold it’s annual badge day on Friday, January 28, and for permission to close the road along the foreshore from 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, the day of the gala and regatta.— Both requests were granted. The request of the Oamaru Retailers’ Committee for a grant towards advertising the town was referred to the Finance Committee. REPORTS. The Abattoirs Manager reported that 39 cows, 74 heifers, 87 steers, 670 sheep, 8 lambs, 1 calf, and 22 pigs were slaughtered during the month.—Received. The Foreman submitted a report ns to the cost of the 4in main at the North road, stating that the cost to the racecourse gate would be about £658 5s 6d, and as far as Mr Cron’s road a further £166 8s 6d.—The report was received. The Borough Inspector reported that 1,385 drivers’ licenses were issued to date, and backyards inspected. Schoolmasters had been interviewed regarding the urgency of children keeping to •pedestrian crossings.—The report was received. The Race Inspector reported that the river remained at a constant level throughout the month, with a good supiply available at the intake gate. An average of from 16 to 18 heads was maintained in the race without difficulty. Wjtb tbe dry weather irrigation was carried on extensively during the month. Slight pollution occurred at irregular periods due to Maerewhenua minng tailings, but on the average the race supply remained satisfactory during the past fortnight.—The report was received. Accounts totalling £1,885 7s were passed for payment.
