KIWI NOTES
With “ Learn to Swim ” Week and the club’s carnival now past, many of the members are beginning to put the final stages to their preparations for the Otago championships, and solid training is the order of the day. Even the learners seem to be infected by the general note of enthusiasm that is pre- . vailing, and many of them are making fine progress. . The Tuesday night club hour especially is one of great activity, and with a number of new members as an aftermath to “ Learn tp Swim ” Week the club coaches are being kept very busy, indeed. Two juniors who have joined ud are Bob Smith and G. Pickering, and both have that keenness which makes for success. Miss June Hannah is making good progress on the crawl. She has natural relaxation, hut must endeavour to straighten her legs a little. Miss . Betty ' M‘Don ald is showing steady improvement. _ She has a good kick, hut is still inclined to fling her arms a little too wide. She is very keen, and will soon develop a smoother strok€< Miss Winnie Dunn is one of the most conscientious members in the club, and it will occasion no surprise to_ find the club’s deputy-captain establishing a new ladies’ record for 220 yards breast stroke next month. The present titleholder is Miss C. Knowles, who won in Miss Dunn’s absence last season, but as Miss : Knowles is still in intermediate ranks she will contest the title even over 75 yards in that class this year. She is training hard, and is bound to perform well. An injured hand kept her out of the water for a week or two, hut she is now doing steady work. , Miss Christine Garvin will take a power of beating in the intermediate free style This gM hse a meet
promising style, and fast times may be expected of her before the present sason ends. J. Lymburn is a keen junior member. He ■ should endeavour to pull straight through with his arms. He has the right idea about relaxation. Don. Reid has altered his stroke slightly, and this should have beneficial results pn his swimming in the distance events this season. Reid holds the Otago mile championship, but he is a more than useful man over the short dash. Clyh. Lawrence is another who is swimming with a much smoother stroke than he used last year. He has already done 64sec for 100yds this season, and it is not beyond him to get down to' 60sec this season. Lawrence is the present holder of the Otago intermediate 100yds title, and should perform well in the other free style events at the Otago championships this season. Miss Greta Harris is now down to serious training with the championships so close at hkndi She should give a good account of herself in the intermediate girls’ back stroke championship next month. Miss Margaret Hudson is making fine progress on the breast stroke. She is coached by that capable instructor, Mr A. Findlay, who has some fine exponents of this stylo in his charge at present. C. Sell is. doing plenty of steady work at present, and looks like being one of the club’s best representatives in. the. junior championships next month. . Miss Gladys Malcolmson is a promising junior girl,- who is bound to improve with competition. Victor Eckhoff is training' hard for the Otago junior boys’ diving championship, in which he was placed second last season. There should be five or six boys from the club taking part in this event this year, and another good performer is Fred. Sharp. ' ‘ Dougi Freeman is showing good form on the boards, and should be in good trim to defend bis Otago men’s diving title next month. Despite the amount of work he puts into the club affairs Arthur Thomas finds time to devote to his own training," and he is moving very nicely on the back stroke- He can be depended on to swim well at the Otago championships. , Waldeu. Johnson, the ex-Auckland champion, was unable to train for the club carnival, so did hot compete in the 440yds invitation event, but he, will probably be a competitor in the Otago championships next month. One of the most improved seniors in the club is W. Warren, the ex-Eastern Suburbs (Auckland) swimmer, who is very speedy over the shorter distances. Miss Gloria Strong was a very promising swimmer a couple of years ago, and she has rejoined, and should soon be taking part in intermediate competition. . . ,'. . Miss Elma Abernethy is training iolidly- for the Otago ladies’ back stroke championship events, in which she gained second places lash season. She should return much improved times this year. • The club is at present negotiating with the Oamaru Club for the latter to pay a visit .to Dunedin shortly as the quests of the Kiwi Club. It is hoped to arrange a series of contests between the two clubs, and members hope to be able to return in small measure the hospitality that has always been extended to visitors by the Oamaru Club. Miss Kath. Lane should endeavour to secure a shallower pull on the arm stroke in the tack stroke. Miss Joyce Lane is swimming well, but must loosen up a little. , , Murray , Wren has the pace, but he requires plenty of distance work. lan Shaw is showing great improvement at water polo, and is one of the best men in the club’s B team. Jim Maxwell is diving with more confidence, and shapes well on the breast stroke.
