FOURTEEN OPERATIONS ON SCIENTIST
THE PRISE OF HIS WORK WITH X-RAYS Professor Charles Vaillant, the radiologist, recently underwent the fourteenth operation which his devotion to the science of X-rays has cost him. Ho was one of the pioneers of X-ray treatment, and began to be attacked 20 years ago, when little was known about the power of the rays, by X-ray dermatitis, the terrible disease which slowly devours the flesh and muscles of those who continually expose themselves to the rays in the cause of science. Pie lost first his fingers, then his wrists, then his lower arms, but did not give up his work. The operation was a minor internal one, and succeeded perfectly. Professor Vaillant lives at the Hotel des Invalides, which is reserved for badly wounded soldiers.
