LIFE SAVING
BOYS' BRIGADE COMPETITION PRESENTATION OF SHIELD Last year the Royal Life Saving Society presented a shield in the Otago Boys’ Brigade Battalion for competition among the companies in land drill and resuscitation. This year the shield was won by the 6th. Dunedin Company (Central Mission). In presenting the shield to the company at its annual demonstration last Tuesday, Mr H. H. Henderson (president of the Otago Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society) commented on the high standard of efficiency reached by the winning team, and congratulated it on the good work achieved. Mr Henderson stated that the shield was intended to give_ the boys encouragement to go for higher awards. He explained that the art of resuscitation was very simple, and expressed surprise that more people were not familiar with such a practical means of being of service to the community. The speaker added that the Royal Life Saving Society believed that resuscitation-should be taught to every boy and girl before leaving school. “ You boys have heard to-night that it is necessary ‘to give.’ _ Life saving is one of the ways in which you can really learn to give, to be of use to some one else. The society does not set out to teach swimming but exists for the purpose of teaching life saving, and hopes that boys and girls will avail, themselves of the opportunity of obtaining this knowledge free.” In conclusion, Mr Henderson urged the boys to practice hard for next year’s competition and to do everything in their power to encourage the work.
