MANCHESTER UNITY

Three propositions for membership were received by N.G. Bro. Isaac at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Caversham held 0,11 Wednesday evening. A report of proceedings of the meeting of the Friendly Societies’ Council was received from P.G. Bro. J. Russell,, and members were advised that the next meeting of the juvenile branch would bo the annual summoned meeting for the election of officers. _ The support of adult members was solicited for this function. Members were further advised that an official visit would be paid to Loyal Centenary at that lodge’s next meeting, a full muster being essential to complete the lodge’s obligations in connection with the efficiency competition. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of congratulation to Bro. Smith, of the juvenile branch, he having been instrumental in the initiation into his lodge of 21 members. The ladies were afterwards entertained at_ a card evening, the prize-winners being Mrs Melrose and Mrs Cameron and Bros. Grant and Cook.

Interest is being maintained in the Loyal Mklcllemarch Lodge. Seven new members were initiated at the monthly meeting and three further proposals for membership received. The principal business was the nomination of officers for the ensuing term. On behalf of P.P.G.M. Bro. It. S. Black, Permanent Secretary Bro. A. Robertson presented to the lodge a framed photograph of the deputies who attended the half-yearly district meeting in Dunedin. The presentation is to be suitably acknowledged. Congratulations were extended to Sister D. Williams, -who is leaving Middlemarch and entering the bonds of matrimony. Sister Williams celebrated her twenty-first birthday in the lodge by entertaining all the members at supper.

On Saturday evening last a party, consisting of the Prov. G.M. Bro. Stabb, Prov. D.G.M. Bro. Sellar, I.P.P.G.M. Bro. E. Hey, Prov. Treasurer Bro. Sligo, Prov. C.S. Bro. Hopcraft, P.P.G.M.s Bros. Clarke, Longworth, and Russell, and P.G. Bro. T. Henderson, journeyed to Milton for the purpose of holding a past officers’ degree meeting. Much credit is due to Permanent Secretary Bro. E. Ransome, who inaugurated the function and made all arrangements for its successful issue. Some 25 past officers presented themselves for the various degrees. These comprise members of Loyal Dalton, Princess Elizabeth, Princess' Victoria, Tuapeka, Alexandra, and Milton Lodges. The function was successful in every way. After the meeting supper was served by members of the Milton Lodge, and visiting brethren returned to town pleased and satisfied with their efforts. ■- '■

N.G. Bro. B. R. Hart presided oyer a large attendance of members of the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge, Lawrence, at the fortnightly meeting. The N.G. extended a welcome to several visiting brethren from the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, these members giving a demonstration of the initiation ceremony under the new ritual. Several stressed the fact that due to the number of anomalies country lodges were handicapped in arriving at correct renditions. This matter will shortly he rectified, as a committee is at present busy on the subject. The visitors jrere accorded the .thanks of the lodge

for their assistance in clearing up several points on which lodge officers were in doubt, and for their capable renditions. At the conclusion of business a social hour was spent in music, song, and story . At the meeting of Loyal Albion on Thursday evening feeling reference was made to the passing of the late Bro. H. E. George, a member of many years’ standing. The lodge observed a short silence as a mark of respect. The attendance was only fair, though a number of visiting brethren were present. Two candidates were initiated and_ one proposal for admission was received. P.G. Bro. J, Swan, secretary of the Past Grands’ Lodge, was present and conferred the first, degree on six brethren and the third degree on two others. Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge at its meeting held on Tuesday evening received notification of the official visit to Loyal Victoria Lodge, Milton, on Saturday, November 27. Visitors were present from Loyal Dalton, Prince of Wales, Albion, Dunedin, and Valley Lodges. An invitation to attend its next meeting and participate in a social function was accepted from Loyal Dunedin. One candidate was initiated, and nominations ■ for office for the ensuing term were opened. It was resolved to open the lodge early on the occasion of the nest meeting, when past officers will control proceedings and a splendid rally of elderly members is anticipated. This is one of the main events on the lodge syllabus.
