ASSISTANCE FOR HOME PURCHASERS.
'TO THB EDITOI. Sir, —-We hear a lot about the liberal assistance that is being given by the Government to assist workers to acquire homes for themselves,, but that has not been the experience o( a friend of mine who recently wished to buy at the price of £9OO a home, a sound fiveroomed bungalow and freehold which, would to-day cost over £9OO to .build (without the section). He was ;in - ai position to pay a deposit and make, good weekly payments. Although He wrote, to the Hon. F. Jones, who was kind, enough to communicate with the Minister in charge of the State Advances Department on the matter, the reply! finally received was that the' Corpora-) tion’s normal lending margin is hot i«[ excess of two-thirds of the assessed value of the property. This would mean a loan of £6OO, leaving the purchaser to find £3OO. And there is .* further catch in that the Corporation will not approve a second mortgage except on stringent conditions. Can you imagine this being any help to_‘a genuine working man wishing to acoulr* a home for his wife and family? He ia still Homeless., November 19.
