Theatre, Balclutha, was filled with a very large audience, representative of all parts ot South Otago, the occasion being the annual Hallowe’en concert under the auspices of the Balclutha Pipe Band. This is always a popular event, and this year’s concert was no exception. Mr Arthur MacDonald’s concert party from the Dunedin Burns Club presented a programme that was different from previous years, and one that met with approbation from the large audience. It was practically the same as that presented in Dunedin, with the exception that the juvenile performers were not present. The whole entertainment was well staged, and reflected great credit on all concerned. During the interval the Balclutha Pipe Band played stirring selections, and earned hearty applause. Mr A. T. Russell, president, then extended a welcome to the members of the Burns Chib, and expressed appreciation of their action in making the annual visit to Balclutha and providing such a splendid entertainment. He also intimated that a Stirling lady had received a parcel of heather from Perthshire and had handed it over to the committee for distribution. Before the
singing of ‘ Auld Lang Syne ’ Mr MacDonald expressed his appreciation of the warm reception given the, Party, and also of the manner in which the committee had catried out the arrangements for the concert. Prior to the concert the Pip© Band, under Pipe-major D. M'Farlane and Drum-major D. Malcolm, paraded in Clyde street, and many favourable comments were on their splendid appearance, and playing. Pipe-major M'Farlane played the music for the dancing items.
WELCOME RAIN. Welcome rain commenced to fall yesterday afternoon, and as a result the ground will receive a good soaking, which will be of immense benefit. The weather is still overcast, and showers fell during the night. It is to be hoped that the winds which have been so prevalent of late will not come up and thus dry things again.
