The -‘Daily Herald’s’ diplomatic correspondent says General _ Franco’s agent, the Duke of Alba, will discuss immediately with the Foreign Office the restoration, of the monarchy with Don, Juan as “ a peacemaking King.” The Duke, who has influential friends in London, assured General Franco that if he offered restoration of the monarchy in addition to withdrawal of volunteers he would get the strongest diplomatic support from Britain. The * Daily Telegraph’s - Paris correspondent says there is considerable activity among Spanish Monarchists in Franco. A plan has been prepared to place Don Juan on the throne. TETUAM RIOT ENDS IN PITCHED BATTLE, GIBRALTAR, November 15. The Tetuan riot culminated in a pitched battle, the demonstrators fighting back when the guards fired. Many Moorish guardsmen joined the rioters, and fired on the Spaniards. Sixty Moors and 20 Spaniards were killed and scores wounded.
[A cablegram received yesterday stated:—Guards at the Spanish Commissioner’s office at Tetuan are reported to have fired on a crowd of elderly Moors, women, and children carrying placards refusing to allow young Moors to go to Spain because so many had gone under broken promises and many had not returned. The firing killed several. Fifty were arrested, and the ring leaders shot. Skimishes occurred throughout the day between armed tribesmen entering from the desert and Phalangists patrolling the streets with machine guns.] -■ WITHDRAWAL OF VOLUNTEERS NO REPLIES YET TO NON-INTER-VENTION COMMITTEE,(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 15. (Received November 16, at noon.) No replies have yet been received from either side in Spain regarding the proposals of the Non-intervention Committee on the withdrawal of volunteers. The Chairman’s Sub-committee meets to-morrow to receive the report of the technical experts.
