HIGH TARIFFS ASSIST MANUFACTURER BETTER PLACED THAN NEW ZEALAND [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND,. November 15. Reports of the flourishing prosperity in Australia mad© frequently by visitors from the Commonwealth were confirmed by Mr N. E, Sheppard, a Melbourne manufacturer, who was a through passenger for San Francisco on the Mariposa. Mr Sheppard said that unless alarming developments in Europe intervened it appeared as though the Commonwealth would enjoy a good period of prosperity. Referring to conditions in the manufacturing business in Australia, Mr Sheppard said a manufacturer in Australia was assisted by high tariffs on imports. In that respect, he understood, the Australian manufacturer was in a better position than the manufacturer in New Zealand, i Secondary industries had been affected in Australia by legislation in the past, mnch' after the manner in which. New Zealand manufacturers were now affected by the new labour laws, but after a time there was a levelling-out process and industry was not retarded for a great length of time.

“ Australia has been fortunate in having a Prime Minister, of the calibre of Mr J. A. Lyons,” he added. “He took the country .through a difficult period in an excellent manner. With most districts recently experiencing rain, there is ©very indication that we will have a good season to give impetus to the general improvement.”'
