RACING NOTES

TOTALKATGR RETURNS FOB CARNIVAL WEEK

The peek’ year for Car nival Week in Christchurch was 1980, when at Biccarton and Addington £509,217 was handled during the seven days’ racing. The figures since 1918 for these two meetings and totals for the week are.: —

In 1918 only three days’ racing was held at Ricoarton, Since 1938 win and place betting has been in vogue at Riccarton, and the same system has been in. use at Addington in 1933, 1936, and 1937,

RECORD OF HARES The spring season is not considered a favourable period for racing mares, but they have played the leading part in the New Zealand Cup on several occasions, having scored 13 outright wins and two dead-heats. The record is .as follows:

regarded as likely to develop into the best stayer of the present season’s three-year-olds in Australia. So far the stake ■winnings of the Australian colts are as follows:—Aiax, £11,450; Paa, £6,970; Avenger £5,490^ mims r. Successful Trainers. Stakes credited to R. B. Berry’s team at Addington last week totalled £1,775, Q. S. Donald’s string earned £1,650, 34- B. Edwards’s £1,475, M. Holmes £96s, and the Barton stable £960.Erratic Handicapping. In the Fendelton Handicap Maroba was weighted at 7.7 and Ardbhoille' at 7.0. Neither started, bat in the Hagley Handicap Ardchoille was given 8-7 and Maroba 7.0, Double Engagements, Quite a number of horses have dual engagements at Invercargill on Saturday, including Pink Robe, Counterflight, Last Post, M'Heatb, So* Fox, 4ji Humbug, Ashaway, and .Ocean Singer, Welcome Rain. The welcome rain which fell foe a few hours last evening was heavier at Wingatui than in the city, and freshened up the tracks nicely. They were becoming very hard, and trainers wiH appreciate the slight change made in the going by the rain.

THNEE-YEAIHUD SUPREMACY With, the close of the Victoria Racing Club’s Spring Meeting, the question of three-year-old supremacy as between Hua, Ajax, and Avenger remains debatable (writes “ Phaeton,” in the ‘Auckland Herald’). When Avenger disposed of Ajax and Hua in the Australian Derby he was conidered likely to prove the outstanding colt. However, the Caulfield Guineas saw Ajax victorious, with Avenger a neck away in second place and Hua third. • In the Victoria Derby Hua developed improvement, with the result that he scored a win by half a head over Ajax, with Avenger in third place. Ajax subsequently won the Linlithgow Stakes, run over a mile at weight-for-aae, and, as he was credited with equalling the existing Australian and New Zealand record of 1.364 for the distance, he has stood up to his strenuous spring campaign in brilliant style. Probably nothing more will he exacted from Hua, Ajax, and Avenger until the autumn, and much interest will be centred 1 in the prospective. meeting of the trio in the victoria St., Leger at Flemington in February. Although Avenger disappointed in the .Victoria Derby, he is popularly.

Invercargill Races on Saturday* The Southland Racing Club has received good acceptances for its meeting to be held next Saturday, excepting in the principal race, for which only five of the 13 handicapped have been paid up for, Wingatui horses are represented in each of the six galloping events, and the meeting should be an interesting one. Southern Successes. Otago and Southland owners represented in the list of winning owners at the New Zealand Cup Meeting are:— Messrs 0. N. Draper £1,500, W. Irvine £630, L. C. Hazlett £560, G. A. Fielding £270, M. Lett off £2lO, E. H. Aubrey £2OO, Price Bros. £IOO, J. A. White £BO, J. Lindsay £75, W. D. M'Leod £6O, W. M Crockett. £SO, Cunningham and Macdonald £35, D. M. Tweedie £3O, and J.. On Saturday he did better, reducing the record to 2.30 . despite the fact that a strong wind »|*de atnwopherio conditions lees favaoTaßie than a year earlier. Stricter Supervision. No trainer in New Zealand turned his horses out in more immaculate fashion than J. S. Shaw, and it i« probably one result of his appointment as stipendiary steward that stricter supervision is to 'be exercised in regard to reinsnien’s clothing and gear (says the ‘ TSmaru Herald ’). . Good Stakes for Stayers. Middle-distance horses have been particularly well catered for at meetings to be held in Otago and Southland during the approaching holiday meetings. The races provided for them are:— D.J.C.—Otago Handicap, 10if ... £SOO Waikouaiti Cup, 10f ... ... £SOO Wyndham Cupj lOf .•• ... £450 Oamaru. —President’s Hep., 1W £250 Invercargill Cup, lOf v ••• £SOO Southland Handicap, 1W £3OO Total a« >-« s.- £2,500 Winning Horsemen and Trainers. Lawn Darby. The appearance of Sydney pacen Lawn Derby at Epsom next month will} arouse widespread interest, ■ and if hq is as good as Australians claim, he{ should stroll home in the £I,OOO- Presi-. dent’s Handicap (2.43) off the marki allotted to him (says the Timaru ‘ Hem aid’). It is easy to be confused in estimating the times of * Australians, owing to the different methods of com. putation in- different States. It waq cabled last week that Lawn Derby had] fractured all records for . the Common-, wealth by winning the Ascot £SOO ini 3.23 from 120yds behind. In Sydney] 3.23 would have meant ,net ; time, in Victoria gross times are announced,, and Lawn Derby’s actual rate was 3.23| for a mile and and 120yds, on 12J furlongs. He travelled at ap<, proximately 13yds per second, so thaii his net time was 3.13 3~5, but on. thef 12yds soak in New Zealand he wool<J have been credited with 3.13, Note*. Grand Finale Has been paid np fon in each of the open races at the Inver-* cargill Meeting, six, eight, and - teal furlongs. ..’■■■■ The acceptance of Rodettr in. the Fly* ing Handicap at Invercargill on Sating day indicates the return of R. M'Kayj, tp Riverton. He has made Riccartont Mb headquarters since last August. The Cattle Flat Racing dub wiH hold a non-totalisator meeting on Do. ©ember 28, and. distribute £llO inj stakes. Milford and Fog Peak will only have to race up to the form they showed aij . Riccarton to be unbeatable in thein engagements at Invercargill oa Saturt day. ' South Maud horses won 31 raoee. compared with 11 by North. Island a| the JSew Zealand Cup Meeting.
