ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

FATAL SHOOTING MISHAP. Wiliam George Urquhart, aged 29, a married man, died in Rotorua Hospital last evening as the result of injuries accidentally received when handling a peani-ifle. It is understood that the deceased left his parents’ home _ early in the morning with the intention of shooting a cat. He was later found lying beside a rifle, which had been discharged, and suffering from a wound in_ the chest. He was admitted to a private hospital, but died. He leaves a widow and oxje young child. CAR PLUNGES INTO WATER. A motor car containing four women got out of control and dived into the town wharf basin, near Victoria bridge (Whangarei) on Sunday. AU the occupants 1 escaped without serious injury. The car was driven by Mrs Len Adams, of Main’s Avenue, who swerved bo avoid a cyclist. In recovering, the car skidded in loose metal. It crashed through a handrail on the fishermen’s jetty and somersaulted into 4ft of water. The vehicle had started to elide into deep water when' Mr L. W. Waldron dived in fully clothed and managed to hold it until assistance _ came within a few seconds. The imprisoned women were released, and they were found to be suffering from bruises and shock. INQUEST ADJOURNED. An inquest into the death of Thomas Fogarty, a married man, aged 40 years, who was found dead in an hotel bed at Palmerston on Saturday, was opened at Palmerston on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was formerly, clerk of the borough. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., sat as coroner, and, after hearing evidence'of identification and the testimony of Dr P. P. Howden, who considered the deceased’s heart to be in a poor condition, adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed later. A post mortem examination is to be held. TRAPPED IN EARTH FALL. A Public Works employee, Harry M. Holland, a married man, of Bulls, was killed this morning when caught in a fall of debris while working at a level crossing elimination job on the Cliff road, near Marton. A cutting was being made under the railway to take the main highway. ' Suddenly the face fell outwards, trapping Holland. Death was instantaneous, and three others narrowly escaped. The victim leaves a wife and two children.—Marton Association message.
