COLOURFUL FITTINGS Store than was the case at one time style is being given to bathrooms by the careful choice of fittings. These, of course, are fixtures, and make a more pronounced effect on a prospective home purchaser than the furnishings in the bed and living rooms. When the present tenant leaves he takes the furnishings with him, but the bathroom fixtures remain just as the buyer saw them when looking through the house.
To giro the bathroom individuality colour is necessary. Colour in the domestic bathroom also takes away from it that hospital-like atmosphere associated with white walls. This can be achieved by using a pleasing, toned glazed tile for the wall dado, and painting the wall above. The floor can have coloured tiles or rubber carpeting. Colour can. be still further introduced by installing a coloured bath and basin to, match, and using brightcoloured door handles to any cupboards. In houses where there are three or more bedrooms more than one bathroom is usually provided. If a complete second bathroom is not included there is usually a separate shower and dressing cubicle. The convenience of this arrangement is apparent.
In a small house the position of the room is governed by the bedrooms. Where there are only two rooms it is placed between them. The bathroom should be planned so that it receives ample light, air, and sunshine. The shape of the room need not be rectangular; small spaces can be very successfully used for the_ wash basin or a toilet. The bathtub in the modern home is now built into a recess, so that the floor of the room is left clear. This allows a glass shower screen to be fixed so that it will fold back against the wall. The usual treatment is to tile the front of the bath and the walls of the recess. Soap-holder and handgrip can be built into the tiled wall. The newest type of shower spray is fitted into the end wall, and is on a swivel, so that the spray can b© directed as required. Chromium-plated fittings are now generally used. Where there is a circulating hotwater system in the room a good idea is to carry the water through the pipes of the towel rail, so that it will be warmed to dry, the .towels*
