RUSH TO BUILD
EFFECT OF COMMONWEALTH « ELECTION There was a rush to build in Sydney the day after the Commonwealth elections. according to the ‘ Sydney Morning Herald.’ Leading city architects reported that, following the elections, they had received instructions to proceed with the preparation of plans and specifications lor a number of new buildings, which had been tentatively approved some months ago, but which had been held up. Architects reported also that consultations would be held to complete the consideration of tenders for new buildings which had been held over pending the election. It is the opinion of master builders and architects that there will be a considerable amount of new work offering for contract within the next two month*There had been a slowing down of acceptances during the past three months. That leeway, it is anticipated, will bo made up before the usual slowing down on the calling for tenders, which always occurs at the beginning of the holiday season. Master builders are continuing their negotiations with the suppliers of building materials with a view to getting fixed prices on a basis below that existing at present. It was stated that the increased cost of building is retarding the erection of many cottage homes, and .also adding to the construction cost of homes provisionally approved by co-operative building societies.
