BOATING TRAGEDY

A double drowning in tragic circumstances occurred to-day at Peterborough, on the Victorian .coast, 200 miles west of Melbourne. Reginald BHen, who was visiting from Camperdown, was taken fishing by Cr. J. Collins in a 14ft rowing boat, 800yds off-shore. The boat swamped in heavy seas and Collins was washed out. Ellen swam to a group of rocks 40Oyds from the shore and signalled to his wife and children on the cliffs. Aid was not forthcoming. The nearest suitable boat was at Warrnambool, 35 miles away, and it was sent for at the outset in charge of the harbourmaster, but it had not reached Peterborough by nightfall. Meanwhile an aeroplane from Warrnambool flew over the bay, but did not sight the men. Mrs Ellen, who was watching from the cliffs, saw her husband leave the rocks and attempt to swim to the shore, but ho was unable to make headway, and disappeared. The wrecked boat was later found on the shore.'
