NOTES ON THE RACING

[By St. Claih.]

Though the Tnorning broke dull, long before the concluding day’s racing commenced at Addington the sun was shining and the climatic conditions were the best of the week. The track still carried a good deal of loose stuff on top, but there was not as much dust raised as on either of the other days. The attendance was very large and was again reflected in the totalisator returns. The staff working the new machine proved equal tq the demands of the public, and handling the money much smarter than on either Tuesday or yesterday, put through £64,946. _ The sensation of the week’s racing was the defeat of Indianapolis and his stable-mate,'. Tempest, in the Free-for-all. The latter, usually a fast beginner, broke at the start, and for the second year in succession the driver of Indianapolis drew the outside berth at the barrier. On this occasion, however, he began brilliantly, and at the end of half a mile, was in front. From then on until after ho -turned into the straight the only speculation was as to what distance he would win by and what time he • would record. Fifty yards from the turn he apeared to be in trouble, and at the distance it looked odds on that last year’s winner, Roi L’or, would score again, but with a fine run over the last furlong Supertax got up to beat him by a narrow margin and return a big dividend to win. 'Mr Barton’s bracket was backed down to such a short price on the place machine that they would have to have finished first and second for punters to show a profit.

Pot Luck returned the best dividend of the day when he won the Louisson Handicap in 4min 20 1-5 sec, the fastest two miles of the meeting; but it is very questionable if he would have beaten King’s Play had the driver of the latter not driven his horse to a break in the last 50yds. Toorak put' up an attractive performance to beat Ginger Jack in the Australasian Handicap and had to go 3min 18 3-ssoc to win. The big straight out trotters’ race provided a fine struggle between the two favourites Waikato Prince- and Wahnooka, and the success of the former was due to him being next the rails all the way. They were in front over the last ten furlongs and never more than; half a length apart. Plutus repeated his mil©' saddle victory on Tuesday by beating a good field in the concluding event in which Southern Smile was unlucky to begin badly. Always handy to Elvo Plutus beat her easily in the run home. Captain Bolt (1,269-1,238), Lament (540-1,040),- Golden Eagle (499-894), Little Rota (351-878), Lady Sonoma (285-628) and Gyrate (200-573) were the best backed for the Hblmwood Handicap. Gyrate, Lady Sonoma, and Debutante began the smartest, the favourite going away slowly. At the end of half a mile Lady Sonoma took charge and at .this stage Captain Bolt was lying last. Entering'the last lap Lady Sonoma 'was showing the way to Reward. Mataunga - and Captain Bolt ran up very fast on the outer. With three furlongs to go he joined Lady Sonoma and .they were followed by Little Reta. Captain Bolt was first into the straight and ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Little Reta who beat Lady Sonoma five lengths. Debutante, Lament and Golden Eagle were next.

. Plutus and Todd Lonzia were witHdrawn from the Sprinters’ Handicap, and Frisco Boy (2,446-1,999) was made odds-on chance on both machines, with Renown’s Best (861-1,640), Kewpie’s Bond (415-1,072), and Casanova (378051) next fancied. Casanova and On Parade broke at the start and Renown’s Best was slow to move off. _ After 100yds had been covered Kewpio’s Bond was in charge from Golden Cross, Frisco Boy, and Harlequin. This order was maintained to the entrance of the last lap, where Flvo ran into second place, and with Kewpie’s Bond still in charge, led along the back from Frisco Boy, Harlequin. and Golden Cross. Kewpie’s Bond and Flvo were still in charge at the home turn with Harlequin and the favourite next. Directly heads were in lino for home. Frisco Boy got an opening, and at the distance had the

race in safe keeping, winning by two lengths from Renown’s Best, who finished fast to beat Kewpie’s Bond half a length. Battlefield, Golden Cross, and Harlequin were next. Elvo broke at the top of the straight.

The Gamble-War Buoy bracket (1,843-2,530), King’s Play (1,5191,652), Do Soto (969-1,302), Lucky Jack (849-1226), Graham Direct (7311,216), and Willow Wave (484-897), wore the best backed for the Louisson Handicap. Graham Direct, Rollo, and Willow Wave lost their chances at the start, and King’s Play skipped. When the field settled down Glenrossie was in charge, closely attended by King’s Play, Gamble, Evicus, and Bingen Palm. There was no change in the next mile, and entering the last lap Glenrossie (who thus won both of the lap prizes) was a length in _ front of King’s Play, with Evicus, War Buoy, Pot Luck, and De Soto next. At the end of a mile and a-half Glenrossie, with King’s Play on his wheel, was still in charge, and they were followed round the far turn by De Soto, Pot Luck, Lucky Jack, and Gamble. The last-named broke approaching the home turn, and King’s Play was first into the straight from Glenrossie, Ds Soto, Pot Luck, and Lucky Jack. Inside the distance King’s Play’s driver used his whip, and the horse skipped. Pot. Luck then got up to heat him a neck. Do Soto was four lengths away third, followed' by Lucky Jack, Glenrossie, Gamble, and Evicus.

Parisienue (1,954-1,839), Village Guy (1,572-1,878), Lady Fame (1,0931,651), Big Author (872-1,332), and Rocks Ahead (480-1,208) were the best backed for the Lyttelton Handicap. Big Author broke badly at the start, and Isobcl Derby led out from Smooger. At the end of two furlongs the latter took charge, and led Isobel Derby, Sea Gift, Gunfire, and Village Guy for the next mile and a-half. Approaching .the home turn Smooger was just in front of Gunfire, Paris? ienne, Sea Gift, Lady Fame (wide out), and Village Guy. Then a great race to the post ensued, Parisionne scoring ,a nedk victory from Sea Gift, with a similar margin to Village Guy. Lady Fame was three lengths off fourth, with another gap to Rocks Ahead. * • • • Toorak (2,482-1,969) was sent out an 6dds-on ph aneo on both machines in the Australasian Handicap, with Waipahi (727-1,215), Aircraft (462-1,195), Ginger Jack (444-1,100) , and Celebrity (403-930) the next fancied. Repeal and Belle Grattan were slow to begin, and after Celebrity had led for about two furlongs Ginger Jack ran to the front and quickly drew out three lengths clear from Toorak, Celebrity. and Doris Derby. Entering the last lap • Ginger Jack was two lengths clear of Toorak, with Sage King, Repeal, and Waipahi all close up. After rounding the far turn Ginger Jack drew out three lengths clear and led Toorak, Repeal, and Celebrity into the straight. Inside the distance Toorak challenged Ginger Jack and beat him a neck. Both Repeal and Celebrity were slowing up on the post, and Belle Grattan got up to beat them a head for third money. Waipahi was sixth.

Wahnooka (2,811-2,379), Waikato Prince (2,360-2,370), and the Golden Eagle-Bittersweet bracket (1,816-2,421) carried fill© heavy wagering on the Dominion Handicap for unhoppled trotters.

Amonos broke badly in the first furlong, and Raclaim led Golden Eagle and Flotsam over the first three fur-, longs. Then the last-named took charge and led Raclaim, Bittersweet, Garner, and Golden Eagle past the stand (four furlongs). After six furlongs had been covered Waikato Prince and Wahnooka ran to the front and remained there to the finish. The former, on the rails, always maintained a slight, advantage, and in the run to the post beat Wahnooka a short length. Norman Fox finished fast into third place half a length away. Garner and Flotsam were next. Only Do Soto was withdrawn from the Free-for-All, and the IndianapolisTempest bracket _ (2,752-2,836), was sent out a screaming hot odds on favourite, with Roi I’Or (626-1,172) and Lucky Jack (456-799) next favourite. Roi I’Or led Lucky Jack and Indianapolis over the first two furlongs, Tempest and Willow Wave both losing their chances at the start. Indianapolis ran into second place entering the straight the first time, and took the lead from Roi I’Or, Bonny Azure, and Lucky Jack. Racing along the back Indianapolis was a length clear of Roi I’Or, and going along the back Indianapolis was nearly two lengths clear of Bonny Azure, with Supertax and Roi I’Or handy. This order was maintained into the straight, but at the distance Indianapolis was in trouble and Roi I’Or was the first to head him off. Then Supertax put in a great run and just caught Roi TOr in time to beat him a good neck. Lucky Jack was a length away third, two lengths in front of Bonny Azure, with Indianapolis fifth.

For the Hornby Handicap Plutus (2,391-1,991). Frisco Lady (2,1211,949), Southern Smile (1,529-1,762), Raydus (575-1,015), Lady Fame (525759), and Big Author (484-673) were the best backed. Big Author, Southern Smile, Worthy King, and Lady Fame lost their winning chances at the start, and Double Great broke. Elvo led out from Plutus and Frisco Lady. At the end of two furlongs Frisco Lady displaced the favourite in second place, and Elvo led Frisco Lady, Pluto, Grace M’Elwyn, and Agile into the final lap. Tho three leaders held their place to the turn for home, but once in the straight Plutus headed Elvo and beat her home two lengths. Agile was half a length away third, then followed Raydus, Lady Fame, Gunfire, and Big Author.
