THE FIRST RATH TUB
The first American woman to use a bath tub was the wife of a wealthy cotton and grain dealer of Cincinnati, Ohio, who installed a tub in 1842. The tub, which was 7ft long and 4ft wide, was encased in Nicaraguan mahogany, and was lined with sheet metal. It weighed 1,7501 b. _ Shortly after this miniature swimming pool had been assembled, complete with pump, its proud owner threw a party, and invited his guests to try the contraption. Several of them did, with every Victorian decency observed, but next day news of the unprecedented tub and its uses found its way into an irate Press. Politicians and doctors as guardians of the public wealth and health were uncompromising in their wrath. In fact, so great was the general apprehension that not long after this the State of Virginia levied a tax on bath tubs, and increased the water rates.
