ENCOURAGED AMONG WOMEN IMPRISONMENT FOR MOTOR DRIVER [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, November 5. John Ellis, a motor driver, aged 30, pleaded guilty in the police court to conducting premises in Albert street as a common gaming bouse, also to tour charges of selling liquor without a license. Mr Orr Walker, S.M., said the worst feature of the case was that he encouraged gambling and drinking among women. Ellis was sentenced to 21 days on one charge of sly-grog selling and was fined £4O on the gaming “ Imprisonment might not affect him very much, but it will stop others who are similarly inclined. The fine will get at his pocket,” said the magistrate.
