RICCARTON TRIALS CANTERBURY J.C. MEETING FINAL GALLOPS [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. November 4. The Riccarton work this morning provided the final gallops before the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. The weather was fine before breakfast, but a cold wind sprang up after the interval. The outside course proper was open, but was not in great request, most or the preferring the plough, which was in good, order, though a trifle holding for the early gallops. There was a lot of useful work, but the similarity of times emphasised the open character of the New Zealand Cup, as well as other races. • Except where otherwise mentioned, the work was done on the plough. * CUP CANDIDATES. Wild Chase was one of the first to work. He and Great Bramble broke away from the anile and a-jquarter mark, doing the first _ half-mile in' 32sec. Mulatto then joined in, Great Bramble dropping out a little further on. The Cup horse did the first seven furlongs in Imin 31 3-Ssec, and finished his task in 2min lOsec. He was going well at the end of a useful gallop. Rebel Lad, Sovereign Lady, and Suneo started off from the_ mile post. The first-named pair were in front all the way, finishing tagether, with Sunee close up. After racing the first two furlongs in 26sec, five furlongs in Imin 4sec, the full journey was done in Imin 43 2-ssec. Both Cup horses were going well all through, while Sovereign Lady pleased her Spring Plate admirers.^ , Ccrne Abbas. Argentic, and Enge were again mates, this time over a mile and a-quarter. The first-named pair were clear of Enge at the finish, with Argentic going a trifle the better. The first two furlongs took 26sec, four furlongs 51 3-ssec, seven Imin 31sec, and the full distance 2min llsec. Boomerang, Alight, and Cuddle were sent out for a mile and a-quarter. Cuddle caused a little trouble and lost a lot of ground, the trio settling down eventually in single file. Boomerang was in front all the way, registering Imin 44 l-ssec for the last mile, while the times of the other two were similar. Cottingham, Queen of Song, and Small Boy, in that order, did the mde and a-quarter in 2min lOsec, after the first half-mile had been done in 61 1- Though Cottingham finished in front he was being kept going, and Queen of Song was travelling very well, while Small Boy, on the outside/ was rroing very strongly at the. end. •° Lowenherg and Friesland were to have had a sound gallop in company, but the former is a lazy** worker, and the pair wound up by taking Imm 39sec for seven furlongs. Trebleack had Milford as mate over seven furlongs in Imin 31 3-ssec, after the first four had taken 52sec. These two Southlanders look well. Silver Streak galloped after breakfast, and again set an easy record mile. He started off fast, the first two furlongs taking 24 3-ssec, five furlongs Imin Isec, and the mile Imin 39 4-ssec. Pol Roger joined in the last five furlongs, but Silver Streaky beat him home, and his was a brilliant effort. THE SPRINTERS. Ben Braggie went off slowly from the six-furlong post, and registered Imm 18 3-ssec, coming home well. Paper Slipper was given an easy round. Brunhild had no trouble to heat Ardmayle over five furlongs in Imin 2 2Waitaha and Moonraker took Imin 18 l-ssec for six furlongs. _ Rebel Chief was not hurried to, do the half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Pelmet, Oratory, and Laughing Lass were among those to do useful work. CLASSIC CANDIDATES. Royal Chief and Smoke Screen went well over a mile in Imin 43sec, after taking 25sec for the first two furlongs. Moo Rule' ran a mile alone in Imin 44sec, after doing 38sec for the three furbngs. Nightdress and Lazybones were together most of the way while doing seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the first half-mile in Slsec. The Crooner did a mile in Imin 42 2-ssec, the first half in 50 2-ssec. He looks_ well. Guinea Fowl ran six furlongs on the course in Imin 19 3-ssec, Great Memory accompanying her over the last four in 53sec. The two-year-old Taurangi was in front of Peerless, with Rakahanga and Protectos a few lengths away, at the end of a sprint down the straight from the half-mile barrier post. Gay Son and Raeburn went well while doing half a mile on the course in 48 4-6 sec, while Godfrey took 52 2OTHER WORK. Rod Sun ran a mile and a-quarter in 2min 12sec, a good effort for the hurdler, the last six furlongs being done in Imin 20sec. Haughty Winner sprinted half a mile easily in 52sec. Alunga beat Kindly over six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec. Swordstick and Cardsharper were going well to do the same in Imin 16 3- Wine Card beat Roshingham in Imin 17.4-ssec; Triune and Parquet beat Dollar .Prince in Imin 17 2-ssec, and Gaysome beat Rebel Queen in Imin 19sec. Paper Note did the distance in Imin 18sec easily, and Rousseau and Top Row took Imin 17 l-ssec. Sir Hugh did the best time for the distance (six furlongs), beating Happy Night easily in Imin 15 3-ssec. Grey Honour was not hurried over five furlongs, and The Bigot was given easy work. Fiord and Solwit took Imin 50sec for the mile, a time which John Charles equalled. Petersham led Dictate over a smart half mile in 49sec, while Drink Up and Clubman did seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, after registering 49sec for the first four. Redolent and Royal Grafton ran a mile in Imin 47sec, while Tar boo did half a mile in Slsec on the course. Trench Fight went about a mile, taking Imin 32 4-sseo for the last seven furlongs. Big Dook and Lickem ran seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-ssec, Royal Amphora and Silver Sight doing six in Imin 20sec, while Nolana, brought homo by Patuma, took Imin 20 3-ssec. Dividend ran five furlongs in Imin ssec, Phalanx and Epic taking Imin 4 4-ssec. THE JUMPERS. Snpcrox and Gold Boy jumped the brash hurdles and then did useful work over six furlongs. ;

KANGAROOS BEAT WIGAN LONDON, November 3. (Received November 4, at 10.30 a.m.) The Kangaroos defeated Wigan by 25 points to 23. At half-time Wigan led, 10-8. The game was played at a terrific pace, play passing from one end of the field to the other. There were many spectacular runs by the players of both sides. Wigan was ahead, 10-3, early, but soon after the commencement of the second half the Kangaroos led, 11-10. The home side then gained the lead, 15-11, and held a slender adyanatge until near the end, when the Australians scored a try and a goal to give them, victory. The Kangaroos scored seven tries and two goals, and Wigan five tries and four goals. NEW ZEALAND CRICKET EIGHT-BALL OVER CONFIRMED [Per United Press Association.] • CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. The eight-ball over will be adopted in New Zealand cricket.
