RICE-GROWING EXPERIMENT

HAWKE'S BAY CLIMATE FAVOURABLE [Per United Press Association.] HASTINGS, November 2. An experiment which may result in the establishment of a new primary industry in Hawke’s Bay is now being embarked upon in Hasings. _ The proposal is to test the possibilities of ricegrowing, and, if it can be grown, whether it can be ripened ana harvested. The idea emanated from a visit recently to Australia by Mr J. Wattie, of Wattie’s Canneries Ltd., who was impressed by the development that had taken place in the rice-growing industry in Australia, and, in particular, in tbe vicinity of Leeton, in New South Wales. He was given a sheaf of ripened rice during harvesting time there, and it has been decided to plant this seed in two small beds at Cornwall Park to see if it will grow and mature in this district. . Mr Wattie considers that the dimatio conditions in this part of Hawke’s 03ay are very similar to those in the Leeton district, and judging from his examination of their products, such as peaches and pears, the productivity of the soil is better than in New South Wales.
