MAYORAL ELECTION

GR A. H. ALLEN TO STAND LONG PUBLIC SERVICE A member of the City Council for the last six and a-half years, during which he has been chairman of a number ot committees, Cr A. H. Allen will be a candidate for the mayoralty at the municipal elections next May. Born in Dunedin, and educated at the Caversham School, Mr Allen has spent all his business life in Dunedin, and has an outstanding record of public service to the city. He is at present managing director of the firm of Messrs Allen, Son, and M'Clure Ltd., general merchants, and for many years ho has been closely associated with those organisations affecting the business life of the city, and in particular with the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was

president in 1930. In 1935 he was appointed chairman of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. Mr Allen was president for a considerable time of the Importers and Shippers’ Association, and he is a past president of the Otago Aero Club. He has had a most varied experience of committee work on the City Council, being chairman of the_ General Committee at the present time. .He held _ a similar position formerly, was chairman of the Reserves Committee for a term, and for two years was chairman of the Finance Committee. In the sporting sphere he has done splendid service, and is a past president of the St. Hilda Bowling Club and of the Dunedin Bowling Centre. For several years he has been a member of the Otago Cricket Association, and for the last two years has been president of the association. Mr Allen did much to establish the ground membership ot the association on a sound basis, and a big improvement in the association’s finances may be expected as tho result of his endowment scheme.
