HALLOWE'EN
The Dunedin Burns Club’s Hallowe’en gathering will be held in His Majesty’s Theatre next Saturday. Hallowe’en is closely akin to what is known as “ Harvest home;” It is the season for the gathering in of the crops, and from time immemorial has been regarded as a time of rejoicing. The feast of ingathering, known in Scotland as the “ Kern,” was a method of celebrating the close of the harvest, and in some of the rural parts still survives. “ All Hallowe’en ” is the name given to October 31, the eve of All Saints, or Hallowmas. It was generally believed that it was the time when supernatural influences prevailed. Hallowe’en to-day is observed by fireside revelries, music, song, and story, and the Burns Club, following timehonoured customs, has prepared an outstanding programme. The reasonable charge for admission should ensure a capacity house. Seats may be reserved at Begg's.
