BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

RECORD PIC PRICES It is at least 12 months since such high prices as those ruling at the Burnside sale to-day have been paid for fat pigs. Porkers were particularly expensive, being worth from 9d to lOd lb, while baconers also participated in the general increase ana were valued between 8d and 9d lb. After opening well at last week’s rates, the sale of fat cattle eased later, only prime heavy bullocks remaining at the commencing values. _ There was a fairly large entry of 280 head of fat cattle, but the general quality was not equal to that shown a week ago. There were a few odd good bullocks, probably comprising about two trucks in all, but the balance was made up of unattractive sorts. The majority were lacking in finish and were in need of a few extra weeks’ feed. The absence of any Canterbury consignments was very noticeable, and there was nothing forward to fill the gap. There was a smaller entry of cows and heifers. Some of these were specially good, but the majority were poor and were wanted only by a small section of the butchers. One specially fine consignment of cows and heifers averaged £l3, these being offered on account of Mr Andrew Townley, of Stirling The sale of cattle opened at firm prices, while good cows showed a slight improvement. These rates were maintained until the middle of the sale was.reached, when there was a general casing except in the case of prime heavy bullocks. Cows and heifers dropped from 20s to 255, particularly on the last two races. The top price was obtained for a nice draft from Mr John Puddy, Waikouaiti, this being in the vicinity of £22.
