STREAMLINED FIGURES
By Donald Loomis
Number Eight-Symmetrical Legs
(Famous Hollywood Physical Director). Jean Chatburn here illustrates an exercise for acquiring a lovely pair of legs. She could do this by supporting herself in a doorway, holding on to either side while she slanted her body as far as possible, but 1 am supporting her 'by the shoulders'so that you can see the position. She alternately lowers and raises her toes from the floor. As she does this she feels the pull all the way up her because skirts are so much shorter and because girls go in for shorts almost universally, a streamlined leg is becoming more and more important.A number of the stars who come to me enjoy riding bicycles, and this sport I recommend to them if they need to reduce, for it will tear down 'fat at a good rate. It is also an excellent exercise for weak or stiff ankles or fallen arbhes. Press the pedal on ‘the ball of the foot, very firmly, to get the best results. If you do not own a bicycle, don’t despair. All you need do is pretend you have one and use the bicycle exercise, with which you may be familiar. Lie flat on your back on the floor, raise your legs up into the air until your weight rests on the upper part of your back, support your waist with
your hands, and rotate your legs in the air as if you were riding a bicycle, ■keeping your thighs as close together as possible. Fat legs are a detriment to any girl who has screen ambitions, but I do not believe that skinny legs are any more desirable. Both need to be remodelled. Sometimes girls are so thin that nothing they eat seems to feed them. This is because they do not live intelligently. They may eat heavily, but the glands of the small intestines are not functioning properly so they get no nourishment. The reason for this is that they live at a nervous tension. They never walk. If they are going two blocks they get out the car, or they take a bus. They never drink ■water. They worry all the time about ■something, and the nerves of the abdomen tighten so that they can’t digest their food. Remember to walk whenever you can. Drink six or eight glasses of water every day. Make your mind obey yon; drag it off the nagging worry and put it on something pleasant, even if that pleasant thing is just the weather or the colour in a cloud. Relax mentally and you will relax physically. Then you will begin to rebuild your health and your figure. Your food will nourish you, and you will feel like living. On Saturday: Arms and Shoulders.
