YEAR’S MEAT TRADE

■ | hnn w m MORE CHILLED BEEF INCREASE iFTmZEH LAMB For the full season, from October 1, 1936, to September 30, 1937, New Zealand killed for export 9,183,263 carcasses of lamb, an increase of 394,189 carcasses over the previous year. There was a decline in the number in the South Island, but an increase of 450.000 in the North Island enabled an increase over the whole. Wether killings were substantially down, and porkers also dropped, but all other de- , scriptions increased. ' , , Figures supplied by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board show that chilled beef exports increased by ab^ut 56.000 quarters, while exports of frozen beef dropped by about 17,000 quarters, with the result "that for - the first time more chilled than frozen beef was sent overseas. ■ , , Exports of frozen lamb increased by about 47,000 carcasses, but shipments of mutton were nearly 70,000 less than the previous year. Pork decreased by about 2,000 carcasses. The destination of the shipments showed little change, practically all the meat going to the United Kingdom. During the'past year 5,763 quarters of beef were sent to the Far East, compared, with .1,623 in the previous year. In addition 1.252 carcasses of lamb were sent to the East last year, slightly less than in 1935-36. The total shipments during the two seasons were : im37 . 193 5.36.
