PENINSULA COUNTY

COUNCIL S MONTHLY MEETING A brief agenda paper was dealt with by the Peninsula County Council at the monthly meeting at Porotobello yesterday. Present were Crs H. Macandrew (chairman), J. Cross, W. 1). Stewart, J. T. Irvine, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. J. Hellyer, J. W. Harbrow. and D. J. S. Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. The council’s attention was drawn to the condition of District road by Mr M. E. Walker, Macandrew Bay, who wrote that portion of it had been washed away.—Until the Government’s flood grant was received the council agreed that, nothing of a permanent nature could at present be attempted to remedy the state of the road. Another appeal to improve the road from Portobello to his property at Hooper’s Inlet was received from Mr A. G. Neill (Dunedin). He pointed out that the improvement was justified on the score that his rates had increased by 40 per cent., and the potholes that riddled the surface were 40 per cent, worse. He suggested that a permanent employee look after all the roads along Hooper’s Inlet.—The engineer was instructed to have the work carried out.

More permanent repairs to Lewis’s road, which had been temporarily improved. were sought by Mr A. G. Miles (Portobello), who suggested that councillors make another inspection of this road.t-The engineer was asked to improve the road. A complaint that several roads in the district were commenced but not finished by the surfacemen was made by the North-east Harbour Ratepayers’ Association. A request was put forward that the engineer be instructed to ascertain that these works were properly carried out.—The council considered that the complaint had no foundation in fact, and the letter was received.

Two applications for improvements were received from Mr T. Anderson, who asked that the culvert fronting his dwelling be given attention, and also that the subsidence of the newlyreclaimed roadway be fixed.—Both suggestions were referred to the engineer and Cr Cross.

Pointing out that its condition was definitely dangerous, nine ratepayers of Ross Point asked that Ross Crescent be given immediate attention. —The work had been carried out, reported the engineer. The continuance of the piping along the frontage of his residence at Macandrew Bay in order to prevent erosion of his front lawn into the nearby creek was the subject of an application from Mr W. E. Quartermain. —Referred to the member for the riding. The council was asked by Mr Alex. Bell (Macandrew Bay) to attend to the condition of the road leading to his property.—Referred to the member for the riding. _ Notification was given by the Otago Harbour Board that it was not contemplated to grant a contribution of £IOO to the council and also to the Public Works Department for the purpose of the cost of reopening the Taiaroa Heads road. Instead the grant would be made to the body which carried out the work. —Received. The council decided to donate £3 3s towards the St. John Ambulance apcouncil’s support of the King George V. National Memorial Fund was eulogised in a letter of appreciation from the Prime Minister.—ReThe sum of £l4 was received from the secretaries of a recent art union by direction of the Minister of Internal Affairs, to be expended for the general relief of distress at Portobello. The dumping of tins and other imperishable material on the tip alongside the council chambers was objected by Mr P. W. Moss (Portobello). He pointed out that obstructions were thus being caused on what would eventually be a pipe line leading from tho creek. —The engineer recommended that portion of the tip be closed, and said that arrangements had already been made to carry out the pipe work. He was asked to furnish a report. A permit was sought by Mrs Agnes Woodhouse (Macandrew Bay) to shift her cottage from the Otago Heads on to the road reserve, the applicant stating that she would be prepared to pay an annual rental of £l.—The permit «.was granted.^ As very little money had been expended in the district’s interests for a number of years, the Wavcrley Ratepayers’ Association was of the opinion that a special rate was not warranted to have several contemplated improvements carried out by the council. All that was wanted was that ordinary maintenance work be proceeded with.— Received. GENERAL. Unregistered dogs in the county numbered 29, reported the dog tax collector.—The clerk was instructed to collect the fees, and, if necessary, to prosecute defaulting owners. Visits had been paid by him to the ridings of Otakou, Hooper’s Inlet, WickTiffe Bay, Cape Saunders, Sandymount, Highcliff. and Tomahawk without any wandering stock being found, reported the county ranger (Mr E. Campbell). _ The tender of Disabled Soldiers’ Products for the supply of dog collars, at a coat of £9 16s 3d, was accepted. There were two tenders. FINANCE. The county, clerk (Mr J. Seaton) reported that the following ridings had credit balances: —Sandymount, £6l 3s 4d: Highcliff, £249 16s 3d; Tomahawk, £l9 9s 2d. Debit balance: Otago Heads, £l6 11s Id; North-east Harbour, £263 0s sd; Broad Bay, £lO7 19s sd; Portobello, £163 7s 6d.
