LATEST FISTIC FLASHES
[By Hookeb.]
BOXER'S UNTIMELY DEATH The untimely death of Stan. Smith following his bout with Jackie Sharpe at Greymouth last Saturday night will be regretted by everyone associated with the boxing game. Smith was 26 years of age and was born at Salford, near Manchester. He arrived in New Zealand seven years ago, but did very little boxing for a number of years. Eventually he entered the Wellington amateur championships, being defeated in the final of the light-weight class by Les. Murray. Shortly afterwards ho went to Australia, where he linked \up with the well-known Sydney training school,
Jack Dunleavy’s. His first professional bout was against Tony Monterey two years ago, and the decision was a draw.
In New Zealand he heat Glengarry twice and drew once, beat Ralph Aitken, lost to Henry Dunn and. Doug. Eddington on points, drew with Tui Loveridge, and later beat him on points at Wellington. His victory against Loveridge at Wellington was a convincing one, and indicated that he was going to be a ready-made drawing card for the Wellington Association. In disposing of Loveridge Smith not only employed his whirlwind tactics to the full, but also demonstrated a better knowledge of the scientific side of the game than in his previous contests. He hit straighter and with considerably more power. Smith had set his eyes on the light-weight title, and his death has deprived the sport of &• very promising and popular boxer.
