OBITUARY

MR ALEXANBER WILLIAM MARTIN The death yesterday of Mr Alexander William Martin removes a widelyknown and highly respected figure throughout the province, the deceased being a traveller for the firm of Messrs Ross and Glendining Ltd. for 30 year* until his retirement five years ago. Mr Martin was horn and educated at the William Street and the High Street Schools, and his' lengthy connection with Ross and Glendining lasted practically froip the time he commenced his business career. He took a keen interest in the activities of St. Matthew’s Church, being the parishioners’ warden and also the treasurer during the depression' years. This was, the first church in the South Island to use interior-flood lighting, and Mr Marten was instrumental in having it installed. The deceased, was member of the executive of- the Council of Christian Congregations, and apart from his interest in the .ehurCh,- he- was also a member of .the executiveof- the Otago Expansion League for a _period- and a member of the Commercial Travellers’Club. Mr Martin’s -health had been failing for the past two years. He is survived by his wife and sene son, Mr Lloyd- Martin, of Christchurch.
