ATTACKED BY SUBMARINE
BRITISH DESTROYER ON PIRACY PATROL TORPEDO MISSES MARK Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 4. The Admiralty confirms that the destroyer Basilisk, which was engaged in the piracy patrol, was attacked by an unknown submarine off Cape San Antonio. The Basilisk detected the presence of a submerged submarine just before it launched a torpedo, which missed. The Basilisk dropped depth charges, but the result is not known. The scene of the attack, which was the first by a submarine since the patrol was established, is almost identical with that, of the Havoc. It is understood that other destroyers and seaplanes rushed to join the search for the submarine. FRUITLESS SEARCH LONDON, October 5. The search for the submarine which attacked the Basilisk proceeded without avail through the night. It will probably be abandoned to-day. GERMAN COMMENT MOSCOW BLAMED. BERLIN. October 5. 'A' semi-official commentator says: “ This, without doubt, is a new act in Bolshevist piracy. Moscow is doing everything to provoke another incident in view of the negotiations over the Spanish question.” FRENCH PAPER'S ALLEGATIOH PARIS, October s. ‘Le Jour* says: “Aggression against a British warship can only serve the designs of Moscow, which has every interest in upsetting the tranquility in the Mediterranean.” DESTROYERS RESUME PATROL (British Official Wireless.) ' RUGBY, October 5. (Received October 6, at 11 a.m.) The Admiralty announces that all destroyers resumed their normal antipiracy patrol duties after the search for the submarine which, attacked the Basilisk. • ,
