ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. A Napier message states that Joseph Smith 167), of Berhampore, Wellington, who arrived here by the express train last evening, was knocked down by a car in Harding’s road and died a few minutes after admission to the hospital. He was visiting Napier for the purpose of attending the wedding of his ' niece to-day. An inquest will be held to-morrow morning. FARMER’S DEATH. When a rifle which ho was carrying accidentally exploded as he was climbing through a fence on his farm yesterday, James Armitage, of Blackstone Hill, received a wound in the head from which he died in the Maniototo Hospital at 8.30 last night. Deceased, who was a widower of 54 years of age, was going round his sheep, at the time of the accident, and was found by a rabbitcr early in the afternoon. He was taken to the hospital, and was attended by Dr Bell, of Lauder. An inquest will be held.
