ONE-DAY CRICKET PROPOSAL O.fi.A. REJECTS SCHEME Consideration of a proposal from the annual meeting concerning ono-day cricket was quickly disposed of at a meeting of the general committee of the Otago Cricket Association last evening, the innovation receiving no support, and a motion was carried that two-day matches be played as usual. Those present were the president (Mr A. H. Allen) in the chair, Messrs F. N. Binney, E. H. Downes, W. P. Titchener, O. G. Stevens, W. A. Rowland, J. M. Fraser, J. M. Kennedy, H. Eckhoff, G. G. Austin, E. H. Ferguson, E. G. Williams, H. D. Kerr, R. O. Talbot, H. Harvey, G. R. Dickinson, D. A. Solomon, and Dr A. A. Reid. Mr Fraser moved that two-day matches be played as previously, Mr Eckhoff seconding the motion. Mr Rowland supported the motion, and declared that when one-day cricket was tried here previously it was hot a success. It had been submitted that one-day cricket would benefit the finances of the association, but he did ! not think this was so. A strong batting side might go in and make 300 runs, and the opposing side “ would sit on their bats,” which would not help cricket. Another point was that if one or two batsmen made big scores, the “ rabbits ” would not get a hand, which would not be for the good of the game. The motion was carried. The hours of were fixed from I. to 6.30. OPENING OF COMPETITIONS. Mr Ferguson said that tho Ground Committee was hopeful that it would be able to begin its competitions on October 16, but this was dependent on weather conditions. On Mr Ferguson’s motion, October 16 was tentatively fixed for the opening of the senior and intermediate competitions. PLUNKET SHIELD DATES. The Auckland Cricket Association suggested December 31, January 1,3, and 4 as the dates for the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Auckland at Auckland. The Secretary said that if this were agreed to, it would necessitate the Canterbury match at Christchurch being played on December 24, 25, 27, and 28. Mr Fraser moved that the dates for the Auckland match be left over till Canterbury’s wishes were known, tho motion being carried. It was decided to suggest that the Canterbury match commence on Christmas Day and the Auckland match on New Year’s Day. COMMITTEES APPOINTED.
