AUSTRALIAN SUGAR

PURCHASES BY HEW ZEALAND Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright BRISBANE, October 5. Speaking at the annual conference of the Queensland Federation of Chambers of Commerce, the president, Mr George Groom, urged that the Premier, Mr Forgan Smith, who is now a world expert on sugar, should visit New Zealand and discuss with the Dominion Government whether there was any means by which New Zealand could alter its internal economy order and permit the importation of Australian sugar on a much greater scale than at present. He said that New Zealand’s purchases of sugar, upwards of £600,000 worth annually, came chiefly from foreign countries. Australia supplied only £7,000 worth. Some quid pro quo arrangement by Australia or a preferential trade agreement, be thought, would provide o, solution to the problem.
