HOW NEXT WAR WILL BE FOUGHT
COLONEL S. G. P. NIGHOLLS'S OPINION Denial of popular opinion that another war would be fought out predominantly in the air was made by Colonel S." C. P. Nicholls, who retired recently from his command of the Southern Command in at tho annual reunion of the Old? Contemptibles’ Association at Christchurch on Saturday evening. “ If we do have another war of course I hope we don’t it would be, in spite of public opinion to the contrary. a war in three armaments,” Colonel Nicholls said. “ The three armaments will be the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, and the final issue will come down to the man with the bayonet.” Referring to the conflict in Spain, Colonel Nicholls said that both sides possessed the armaments, but they lacked tho men with bayonets. “If they had in Spain the morale and training you men had there would be only one side in it—the side with the bayonet.
1 w’ould like to malice this clear, because in modern times people are inclined to run away with the idea that there will be only one unit in the next war, tho Air Force,” he added. “ 1 want to emphasise that it wall be essentially on a three armament basis.”
