WEATHER FORECAST
COLD-PASSING SHOWERS The following weather forecast- wu issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the southern districts —Dunedin, - Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay An intense anti-cyclone in located over South-eastern Australia, and extends across the Tasman Sea. While pressure is still very low to the east of New Zealand, it is rising rapidly over the Dominion. Forecasts Strong southerly winds, v still reaching gale force in places, but gradually moderating. Weather changeable and very cold, with passing showers and, on parts of the coast, hail. Conditions later slowly improving. Sharp inland frosts probable.* Sehs rough to high* SNOW, HAIL AND RAIN. Snow commenced to fall heavily early this morning, upon a sudden fall in temperature, Dunedin being covered by a thick white blanket ,by 9 a.m., when the fall-showed a tendency to merge into intermittent .showers of hail and sleet, with occasional heavy showers of rain. A strong, gusty southwesterly prevailed at npori, when temperatures were at a very low level, tfie respective maximum and minimum readings being 39 and 36.1 deg. A frost of 3deg was recorded at the Gardens last evening, while the thermometer readings over a period of 24 hours yesterday were 4-l.ldeg and 33.2 deg. Rainfall until 9 o’clock this. morning had been ,63in. Barometric pressure was rising at.29.85in at midday, when no sign of an improvement was given, the remainder of the day promising to be cold and turbulent.
