FREE KINDERGARTEN COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Council was held on Thursday afternoon. Mrs D. Phillips, acting president, was in the chair, and the following members were present:—Lady Hutchison, Mesdames Batham, Fitzgerald, Gallaway, 1 Garrett, Glendining, Haggitt, Hudson, Iverach, Jenkins, Moody, Sim, Smith, Taverner, Tlieomin, Whitcombe, and Misses Scott and Ulrich. It was reported that the playing area recently ashphalted in front of the Kelsey-Yaralla kindergarten was most satisfactory and that the children, staff, and parents were very appreciative of this improvement to the grounds. A shed had been erected at the St. Kilda Kindergarten to provide storage room and a quantity of necessary new equipment such as cupboards, blocks, easels, and chairs had been purchased and distributed among the kindergartens as needed. It was also reported’that the N.E. Yallev Kindergarten was now. very well equipped and the 40 children on the roll’ were enjoying and deriving much benefit from kindergarten methods. Parents were taking great interest in the kindergarten, and helping by donating gifts of dolls, band instruments, milk, etc. It was hoped that the local committee would start to function this month. The St. Kilda Local Committee held a jumble sale during the month and raised £ls for its funds. The Mothers’ Club there, by means of a social evening, had raised • a further £7 17s 8d towards the building fund. The subcommittee appointed to sell cushions at the Ranfurly Shield match handed in. £4O, and a vote of thanks was passed to the members for their work and to the Otago Rugby Football Union for co-operation and help in this matter.

It was reported that tho Areherfield School girls had sent in their fifth donation of £SO towards the St. Kilda Kindergarten. Warm, appreciation was expressed of tho kindly interest the girls at Areherfield had taken for the Inst five Tears in this kindergarten, and of the many gifts in material and money they had made to it.
