Tho second of the series of social functions in connection with the Leith Ladies’ Bowling Club was held in the pavilion on Thursday last. A very pleasant afternoon was spent in bridge and “ 500,” a delightful afternoon tea adding considerably to everyone’s enjoyment. Prizes were won by Mrs Rigby (bridge) and Mrs Armstrong (“ 500 ”). the latter prize being given by Miss Gunn. Consolation gifts were received by Mrs Paterson and Mrs Hindmarsh. As it was the final appearance of the president (Mrs Butterfield), who is leaving for a trip to Australia, members and friends took the opportunity of wishing her bon voyage and a safe return. As the beautiful new home of Mrs M. Bain, though large, could not accommodate the number of young people invited to a dance for Miss Norma and Corine Bain, given by their mother last evening, the very jolly dance took place in the Somerset Lounge, ■ which was colour fully decorated with spring flowers and foliage, while myriads of' balloons hung from the walls. During the evening Miss Corine delighted her friends with a Spanish dance, and another pleasant surprise was a song by Mr John Edgar-. Mrs Bain receded the guests dressed in a navy cloque taffeta gown, with silver brocaded lame caatee. Miss Norma Bain wore midnight blue angel skin, embossed with silver, ■ and Corine powder blue ring poplin, with a tight-fitting coatee. The guests were: Mrs Oswald Stevens, Misses J. Gallaway, A. Princess Beatrice’s second edition copy of ‘ Alice in Wonderland ’ was sold for £320 at Sotheby’s recently. The representative of Dr Rosenbach, of Philadelphia, stopped bidding at £3OO. Actually, there was no first edition of 1 Alice,’ for there was a dispute over the illustrations, and the first edition was withdrawn. Those who had copies were asked to return them, and the Princess was among those who did so. The first copy, issued in 1865, was sent to Alice Liddell, the original of Alice, •who later became Mrs Hargreaves. The second copy went to Queen Victoria for her youngest daughter Beatrice. In 1866 ‘ Alice ’ came out without any disagreement, and the Princess received a second edition bound in white vellum, Mrs Hargreaves’s copy, signed by Lewis Carroll, was sold for £1,500. 'On Saturday last the staff of Messrs John Edmond Ltd. held its annual dance in the Astor Cafe, when an enjoyable time was spent by all. A programme of old-time and modern dances was well received, as also was a clever tap dance by the Lawrence Sisters. Two novelty dances were included in the programme, the winning couples being Miss N. Hobson and Mr P. Stokes, and Miss J. M'Donald and Mr G. Stewart.
