TANKER TO DOCK. —Repairs to Rudder. — _ From New Plymouth to Wellington at slow speed, the tanker James Stove, of 8,215 tons, arrived at Wellington on August 4, and entered the floating dock yesterday morning for repairs to her rudder, a defect having been discovered at New Plymouth. It is expected that the repairs will take three or four days to complete. The docking of the James Stove is of unusual interest because of the fact that she will be the first large benzine tanker to use the dock. The tanker Thelma, of 5,578 tons, was docked at Wellington some time ago, but she was used for the carriage of fuel oil, and not benzine, of which the James Stove has discharged over 2,000.000 gallons at Wellington and New Plymouth. The tanker is now empty, but the rules governing _ the docking of a vessel which has carried such a cargo as benzine are very definite, and many precautions must be taken to ensure that there is no chance of gases causing an explosion while the vessel is in dock. The docking regulations state that no vessel which has on board or has carried on her immediately preceding voyage any tar, petroleum, oil, inflammable or explosive fluid or substance in any form as cargo or part of her cargo, shall enter the floating dock until, if so required by the Harbour

Board, a certificate in writing from a competent marine surveyor or analytical chemist approved by the board has been supplied by the owner that the tanks or spaces in which the cargo has been carried, and the vessel itself, are free from all gases_ and dangerous inflammable and explosive fumes. In the case of the James Stove the cleansing of the empty ta,nks to rid them of all fumes would probably take place during her voyage from New Plymouth. The cleansing generally takes the form of pumping in water and emptying it out again, the operation being performed several times. IN RADIO RANGE.
