—Ministerial. — The Postmaster-General and Minister; of Defence (Hon. F. Jones) to-day received a deputation asking for a new; post office at Musselburgh Rise, and also a number of private deputations. In addition to performing the opening of the new infant school at Caversham* the Minister has a full list of depart-* mental engagements to-morrow. Ha leaves for Christchurch by Sunday night’s express.

Mr W. J. O’Brien, inspector for tha New Zealand Insurance Company, left this morning for Christchurch.

Members of the staff met recently at the Corporation tram sheds to maka a presentation to Miss Eileen Thompson, who, after completing nine years’* service in the office, resigned prior to her marriage. On behalf of the members of the staff, the manager (Mr W. H. M'Kenzie) presented Miss Thompson with a token of their goodwill. Mr A. Cameron replied on behalf oJ| the recipient.

Surgeon-lieutenant B. V. Vaughan* Jones, who received his commission ia April, has arrived in New Zealand to join the Imperial escort vessel Wellington as ship’s surgeon in succession to Surgeon-lieutenant R. F. Stenhouse, a New Zealander, whose term of service with the ship has expired. Mr G. M'Namara, Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, who represented New Zealand at tha Imperial Cable Conference in London, is a passenger by the Mataroa, which, is due to arrive at Auckland nexfc. Thursday. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P. for Christchurch South and Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives, and Mr F. W. Schramm, M.P. for Auckland East, are passengers by the Otranto, which left London on July 17 arid is due at Fremantle ou August 17.

The appointment was announced yesterday of Mr J. A. Bruce, A.N.Z.1.C., to the staff of the Dominion Fertiliser Company. For the last nine years Mr Bruce has been engaged as inspector of fertilisers with the Department of Agriculture, Wellington, and prior to that he was for some years engaged in investigating soil problems at the Cawthron Institute, Nelson. Mr Bruce is the author of many papers and articles dealing with the scientific aspect of' farming and soil problems and is recognised as one of the leading authorities in New Zealand on the chemistry of soil and fertilisers* He will take up his duties at Ravensbourne almost immediately. Hon. T, O’Byrne, M.L.C., Invercargill, left by the Maunganui on a cruise through the Pacific Islands.

Dr R. Southworth, Cincinnati* United States, in visiting Wellington, Dr Southworth was for 25 years an associate professor in the medical department of the University of Cincinnati, from which' position he retired four years ago.

According to the * Gazette published last night the following have been appointed members of the Council of Legal Education: —Sir Michael Myers and Mr Justice H. H. Ostler, representing the judiciary of New Zealand; Mr P. Levi and Mr A. H. Johnston, representing the council of the New Zealand Law Society; Professor J. Adamson and Professor R. Macmillan, representing the University Senate.

Mr N. S. Woods, M.A., of Dunedin,who has been ' conducting a research! on industrial relationship under a> Rockefeller fellowship at Manchester University, has been granted six months’ extension to enable him to extend his research to the European Continent. Mr and Mrs Woods were in London for the Coronation and ex-* pect to return to New Zealand towards the end of the year.

Latest guests at the Grand Hotel are Mr G. W. Marshall (London), Mr F. J. Bradley and Mr F. M. Sherwood (Wellington), Mr L. Coxoit (Christchurch), and Dr W. A. Anderson (Queenstown).
