NEW INFANT SCHOOL
BUILDING AT CAVERBHAM OFFICIAL OPENING ON SATURDAY Built in conformity with the latest trends in school architecture, a new infant school erected on the site of the old Caversham School, between Playfair and College streets, is to be officially opened on Saturday afternoon by the Hon. F. Jones. When the new institution was erected it was not large enough to accommodate all the pupils, and consequently the infant department was housed in the old building. With its removal the Education Department proceeded with its plan of providing a modern and healthy building for the infants. This four-roomed school, which has taken about nine months to erect, will house approximately 160 pupils—4o to each room.
Like all such new structures the school is a wooden one, partly as an insurance against earthquakes and mainly because buildings of this type can be remodelled, if necessary, at less expense than brick constructions. The school is equipped with the latest ventilating, heating, and lighting systems.
